1st Edition 1982 with dust jacket

The district known as the Plains is perhaps the most remarkable area of Australia. Its landowning families on their vast estates have preserved a rich and distinctive culture. For writers and artists on the Plains, the coastal cities are remote and of little account. A nameless young man arrives on the Plains, describing himself as a film-maker. In a huge private library he begins his notes for a film and chooses the daughter of his patron for a leading role. Months later the man is still in the library, the young woman has barely noticed him, and the plains themselves seem changed. But nothing in this memorable work of fiction is as it appears. The book can be read as, among other things, an an account of an alternative Australia, a lament for an Australian literature that never been written, or an essay on has the nature of the visible.
